Dr. Thomas Swenson, Pianist
BIOGRAPHICAL INFORMATION
Dr. Thomas Swenson, Visiting Instructor at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, is a national leader in the field of Piano Pedagogy. He is currently the Music Teachers National Association (MTNA) Southern Division Director-Elect and serves as the Chair-Designate of the MTNA College Faculty Forum. He formally served as President of the North Carolina Music Teachers Association and received the honor of becoming an MTNA Foundation Fellow. He serves on The Committee on Teaching Adults for the National Conference on Keyboard Pedagogy and is a board member of the Eastern Music Festival.
Articles, reports, and reviews of his are found in the leading journals in his field including The Piano Magazine/Clavier Companion, American Music Teacher, the Piano Pedagogy Forum, and several online resources. He has presented at many local, state, and national conferences. As a leader in teaching adults, he has taught Recreational Music Making classes throughout the world.
Dr. Swenson holds degrees from Minnesota State University, the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, and the University of Oklahoma.
Currently teaching at the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, Thomas has held teaching and administrative positions at Salem College, North Carolina A&T State University, and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. For ten years he served as the Director of a community music school.
Teaching, research, and service, form the foundation of Dr. Swenson’s present life. Prior to the COVID-19 Pandemic Thomas continued to perform as a piano soloist, with his duet partner Ellyses Kuan (“Zwei & Zwanzig”), as a collaborative pianist, and as a church musician. He frequently serves as an adjudicator, master class clinician, and consultant. His pre-college students are often recognized in competitions, festivals, and other music events.
